The Provincial Government of Cavite, through the Office of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer (OPSWDO), successfully hosted the Provincial Elderly Week Celebration on October 1, 2024 at SM City-Trece Martires. With the theme โElderliesโ Rights and Responsibilities,โ the event brought together 250 participants from various sectors, including presidents and members of the Federation of Senior Citizens, heads and members of the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), as well as representatives from the municipal and city social welfare offices, Federation of Military Retirees and Veterans Association of Cavite, and members of the Provincial Council on the Elderly.
Ms. Ekeiko Paola Haidah P. Sadang, Head of the Promotive Services Division of OPSWDO, warmly acknowledged the participants, emphasizing the provincial governmentโs commitment to the well-being of senior citizens.
An inspirational message was delivered by Ms. Beverly Alvaran, representing Board Member Romel Enriquez, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Chairperson on the Committee on Social Services, Family, Women, Children, and Elderly. She conveyed BM Enriquezโs appreciation for the invaluable contributions of senior citizens to society and encouraged them to remain engaged and empowered in their communities.
During the event, Mr. Rexel Amparo and Mr. Arner Olayres from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) gave an informative session on consumer rights and responsibilities, focusing on RA 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines. Their discussion equipped the elderly with essential knowledge on how to protect their consumer rights and make informed decisions.
A highlight of the program was a presentation by Chaplain Norminda Forteza of the Service Development Australian Filipino Community Services, who tackled the topic of Healthy Brain, Healthy Life. She discussed practical ways to prevent dementia by adopting healthy living habits, such as regular physical activity and a balanced diet, as part of maintaining mental wellness.
In his closing message, Mr. Ciriaco S. Angeles, President of the Regional/Provincial Federation of Senior Citizens, expressed gratitude to the provincial government and encouraged his fellow seniors to stay active and well-informed in their golden years.
Following the program, various booths offering essential services for senior citizens were made available. TESDA offered free manicure and haircut services, while PhilHealth assisted in updating and registration for the E-Konsulta Program. The Office of the Provincial Governor (OPG) also provided free vitamins and medicines to seniors, with prescriptions duly signed by their attending physicians, ensuring they received proper healthcare support.
The event was one of many initiatives of the Provincial Government of Cavite, under the leadership of Governor Jonvic Remulla, aimed at promoting the welfare of senior citizens through meaningful activities and access to essential services. (CPIO)
